SX-727

SX-737

The SX-727 was introduced in 1972 and manufactured through 1973.  It was rated at 40 watts per channel, and was second  only to the SX-828, Pioneer's top-of-the-line receiver.  Pioneer put considerable advertising dollars behind the SX-727 and SX-828.  One ad in Stereo Review in 1973 lead off with: "If you've been saving up for a great receiver you just got a break."  Pioneer was actually giving price breaks on these two receivers to clear dealer stock to make way for the SX-737, SX-838, SX-939 and SX-1010 for 1974.

The SX-727 was a good seller and performer in the United States, and nearly 30 years later this receiver still has eager buyers in the used Pioneer component market.   List price was $349.95 in 1972 and $399.95 in 1973, but dealer discounts made it possible to buy it for roughly $325.  I still own mine today.

SX-737 was introduced in 1974 and following typical Pioneer receiver production runs of two years, was offered through 1975.  Pioneer greatly expanded its receiver line in 1974 with a total of eleven models, which included three quadraphonic receivers.  Pioneer ran a full-page ad in Stereo Review: "The new SX-737.  So much for so little."

The ad opened with: "With its extraordinary engineering, advanced design concept and extreme flexibility, Pioneer's new SX-737 AM-FM stereo receiver offers a level of performance that can only be described as awesome." The SX-737 was rated at 35 watt per channel which adequately served most applications.  List price was just under $400.00

SX-750

The SX-750 was introduced in 1976 and manufactured through 1977.  As with other new SX series receivers introduced in 1976, it featured a silver analog AM/FM tuning dial.  The SX-750 was rated at 50 watts per channel and had performance specifications that all but matched the top-of-the-line SX-1250 except for per channel output.  List price in 1976 was $400.00.  The SX-750 and more expensive models in the receiver line were manufactured in Japan.  It remains a collectible receiver today.

SX-780

The SX-780 was the last of the 700 series receivers Pioneer built.  It was built from 1978 through 1980.  It was rated at 45 watts per channel.  List price in 1978 was $325.00 and it was manufactured in Japan.  You can see from this photo just how handsome this receiver was and why it is still popular today with collectors of Pioneer receivers from the Silver Era.  The late 1970s were indeed very good years for Pioneer receivers.  Examples like this one can be purchased for between $60.00 and $100.00 through internet auctions.  The are as pleasurable to look at as they are listening to.
