P-D70 CD Player

Pioneer introduced its first CD Players in 1984, just after the period I describe as the Silver Era.  However, the P-D70 CD Player is so significant as a unique audio component, having a silver finish, that it is included here.  CD technology was quite new in the early 1980s and consumers were still unsure whether this new audio format would stay around, or go the way of Quadraphonic.  Consequently, examples of the P-D70 are quite rare today.

The P-D70 reflected the emerging technology of microprocessor actuated controls.  It featured a blend of brushed silver and dark champagne accents.  The digital meter readout gave a choice of Binary, Peak or Off readings.  It could store memory and repeat modes of choice.  It also featured track search and index search, as well as slow scan.  Listeners could choose to plug in their Pioneer headphones directly; there was a sliding volume switch next to the headphone jack.

This CD player reflected Pioneer's commitment to build quality.  The front door was solid aluminum, not plastic.  In fact, the P-D70 weighed nearly 18 pounds.  The majority of single disc players that were offered in the consumer market weighed sometimes half that.  This player is certain worth adding to one's vintage Pioneer collection if it is in good cosmetic and operating condition.
